Cool.
Any comments about the battery life?
Hard for me to say. I've only charged it twice since xmas. I only have 2GB card (22 mins at 720P 60hz). The battery is more than enough to fill that up a few times.
The anti shake feature works really well and is probably the main reason the footage is better than the Iphone 4.

What an unbelievable waste of time!
Here's the 2 second version of that form:
Do you have "Distorted or scrambled video on the notebook computer screen"?
Did you buy your MacBook Pro between May 2007 and September 2008?

I have used Crucial in all my MacBook Pros and have never had a problem. If cost is a issue OWC usually has great deals on their ram and seems to have a great warranty to back it up and will let you trade in old ram to knock the price down even further.

Yes, yes, I know that all technology is obsolete the second you take it out of the box, wahwahwah. Heh. Sorry.
Anyway, I've been using this early 2006 C2D MBP for 5 years now and it's been a great machine. It was my first mac and, other than battery problems, it was a fantastic experience that has driven me to purchase apple again.
These new iMacs look fantastic and I'm pretty sure I want to get a 27inch model. My question is regarding how best to ensure I get 5-6 years of great performance out of the computer, hardware-wise.
Money isn't really an issue, but obviously I don't want to spend more than I have to.
1) Is the i7 worth it over the i5? I game, use photoshop, handbrake and the occasional final cut/video editing project. I've been seeing hellhammer give "evidence" that the i7 actually can perform worse for gaming (of course, not by much). Will this be true in 3 years (yeah, I know no one can predict the future, just asking for best educated guesses from the experts)? For instance, will we likely be seeing more games make use of hyperthreading?
2) 1gb vs 2gb vram. I've noticed a lot of people talking about the fact that the 6790m isn't powerful enough to actually ever need 2gb of vram. Is this something that is true right now but could change over time? I don't know the tech details of why 2gb can't really be used, so I don't know if this is something that is the result of the way current software uses the gpu or if 2gb will never, ever be useful on the 6790m.
Hmm, I think those are my two biggest questions. Sorry for the wall-o-text. Just looking for advice on how to get the most longevity out of the system without being uninformed and just buying the top of the line across the board.
Thanks!

I can also confirm this problem. I hope it's just a bug, and not an intentional change D:

30'' would suck... the resolution just wouldnt be there. Just for example: Samsung makes a 30'' LCD TV that can be used as a computer monitor, but its max resolution is 1024x768. A 30'' with good resolution would cost a frickin fortune... 10 thousand or more

Dreadnought, I just installed InCrease (Dual version) on the X-serve a few days ago and it kicks A**. I goes through 50-60 point GROMACS in less than 10 hours. tonight i checked my status before leaving work and I was #140 but the time I got home I was #139. I think I've gained one or two positions a day since getting the server folding:D when we get the company squared away I will have 2 additional DELLs up and folding and 2 more Macs in the fray for a total of 9 CPUs doing Folding. But you're right about passing.... it's like a NASCAR race you can catch em, but passing another story..;) but we'll see:rolleyes:

I have a package design project in my design class and was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for packages that need to be redesigned.
What package couldn't benefit from a well-thought out redesign?

Holding option and clicking "shut down" will bypass the dialog box.
Alternatively, you can press Control + Option + Command + Power/Eject Key - according to this page (http://macos.about.com/library/weekly/aa021400a.htm).

Coolio! - *adds name to list of people who want pics*
It would also be interesting to see if the person who had it kept the HD - It is unlikely, but it could have an early development build of Mac OS X Installed - as even back then Apple had Internal Builds for Prototypes to handle all the extra I/O.

Download Dropbox... done.
Keep it simple to set up, it's free and works perfectly. I use it to work on docs from home, work, my laptop and my iPad.
Pay a little and get a lot more server space.
What he said
Dropbox rocks and the first 2GB are free with up to 5GB thru their referral program.
It basically sets up a folder with subfolders to sync to the cloud.
I went back to school last year and used dropbox everyday to sync files between my MacBook and Mac mini.
If I edit a word or excel file in class on my MacBook, dropbox automatically uploads the changes to the cloud. My Mac mini is running 24/7 and downloads the new edited version 10 seconds later 10 miles away from campus.
I set up my folders with their relative files in each, such as finance, accounting etc.
Sitting in class, I download my PDFs and power points from the schools server to my MacBook which instantly syncs to my home computer, works cross platform from your MacBook to your PC.
If you are all Mac, you can buy MobileMe. With the time capsule, and Back to My Mac, you can easily log into and control your home computer, such as reloading your handbrake or torrent queue. In Have both and find dropbox much better. I also have it on my iPhone and iPad.
Dropbox is what the MobileMe iDisk was meant to be, but much better and free.

Talk to Apple. This looks like the infamous Nvidia 8600M issue and may still be covered under Apple's replacement scheme (I actually got a brand new MBP out of them about 6 months out of warranty).
Make an appointment at your local genius bar and see what they say.

How old is your PB - there was a battery recall.
It is less than 2 weeks old, and I dont have any cords or anything plugged in.

I did not know these existed, and actually do not think they are a bad idea if you are the type to take your gear outside in inclement weather.

The next Mac Mini should be fine for that. If as hoped it gets a Sandy Bridge processor it'll make the MacBook Air look terribly slow in comparison for CPU intensive tasks, especially if you put a SSD in the Mini.
As for EyeTV, the current Mini isn't as powerful as many of us would like, but I find it to be adequate. Hopefully the refresh will correct this and allow smooth playing of live sport in HDTV using progressive scan.
I have EyeTV and two 2009 Minis and see no problems other than the motion problem inherent in 1080i video. Changing computers won't fix that problem.

SecondSpin.com. I'd spend hours in the store in Costa Mesa, I've sold hundreds of CDs to them and bought some back.

You either loved or hated the puck. If it was clean, it felt great to use. I still have them and use one on the blueberry iMac I have in the garage. I personally liked it a lot. That said, I still use the original black Pro Mouse to this day with my main setup.
